RESIDENCY INFORMATION

When is the next deadline to apply?
February 15, 2012 for a residency in 2013. Applications will be available in September 2011

What is the length of the CORE residency season each year?
The residency season runs from mid-March - mid-November.

How many residency sessions are in each year?
There are 7 residency sessions each year.

How long is a residency session?
4-5 weeks

How many artists attend in each session?
8

How many artists attend the Program each year?
60

What is the cost of a residency?
Residencies are at no cost to the artist.

Does the Djerassi Program assist with airfare?
NO, Artists must cover the cost of their own airfare.

Does the Djerassi Program SUPPLY artist materials?
NO, Artists must ship or purchase their own materials.

Is printmaking equipment available at the Djerassi Program?
NO

When is the Djerassi Program Administration Office open?
Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm pacific time

GENERAL APPLICATION QUESTIONS

Is February 15th a postmark deadline?
Yes, Applicants in the US if this falls on a holiday then the deadline is the next day US postal services are available.

Does the Djerassi Program accept applications by email?
NO, application forms and support materials must be sent in together

Is it okay to send my application materials in separate envelopes?
NO, if you plan to do so please contact the Judy Freeland, Residency Coordinator

Do applicants need to send in reference letters?
NO

What is the Alliance of Artists Communities Survey?
The Djerassi Program is a founding member of the Alliance of Artists Communities a service organization for the field of artists’ communities and residencies. http://www.artistcommunities.org.
The information on the survey is anonymous and it helps us with funding and also lets us know we are reaching artists everywhere. Artist do not need to be a member of the Alliance to apply for a residency at the Djerassi Program.

What is the Acknowledgment Post Card with postage?
All applicants in the US must include a self addressed stamped post card. It is returned to you so you know that we have received your application packet.

What is the Notification Envelope?
All applicants in the US must include a self addressed stamped envelope to be notified of selection. Please use "Forever Stamps"

When will applicants find out if they were selected?
All applicants are notified of selection in August.

* INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS QUESTIONS

* Are International Artists eligible to apply for a residency?
YES

* Do International Artists need to send the Acknowledgment Post Card and the Notification Envelope ?
NO, The Djerassi Program will email application acknowledgment and notification.

* How can International artists pay the $35 fee in US funds?
personal checks in US funds, International Money Order, International Postal Order, or by credit card (use the Donate Now button on the Djerassi website Homepage AND select the International Application Fee category)

* Do writing samples need to be in English?
YES

VISUAL ARTS QUESTIONS

Does the Djerassi Program Accept slides in the Vidual Arts and Media?
NO!

Is it okay for Visual Artists to send CDs with jpeg images of their work samples?
YES, Submit a CD or DVD with at least 6 but no more than 20 jpeg images. Numbers 1 through 6 will be projected.
Jpegs should be approximately 800 x 600 pixels @ 72 dpi in RGB modeNOT CMYK mode.
(If your work does not fit these dimensions images may be smaller on one side or top depending on aspect ratio of work. They may not be any larger than 800 pixels on any side or top)
Name jpeg files with your last name(Family Name)-first name-image number.
last name_first name_1.jpg
last name_first name_2.jpg
last name_first name_2.jpg, etc.
The number should correspond with your jpeg the Work Sample Description List. If you send more than 6 images please ALSO include a separate page with All images by number, title, year, size, and medium.
DO NOT NAME YOUR FILES WITH THE TITLE OF YOUR WORK!

Please Note: Jpeg images directly from digital cameras that do not follow the guidelines above, will not be accepted in the Visual Arts category.
Also not accepted are website URLs, videos, QuickTime Movies, IPhoto files, or PowerPoint files.
(Images will NOT be accepted by email)

MEDIA ARTS QUESTIONS

Is it okay for Media Artists to send in CDs or DVDs ?
YES

Is it okay for Media Artists to send in video tapes?
NO

Is it okay for Media Artists to send in slides?
NO

LITERATURE QUESTIONS

Does the Djerassi Program return work samples and other materials?
No, the Djerassi Program is no longer returning work samples and other materials.

Do writers need to send in two copies of their work sample?
No, only two copies of the Application Form

Is it okay for writers to send in more than 25 pages?
YES

Is it okay for writers to send in both Poetry and Prose (fiction) for a work sample?
YES, but these are read by two different panelists, so you need to send in two applications packets

* Do writing samples need to be in English?
YES

Does the Djerassi Program accept unpublished material?
YES

COLLABORATORS

Do collaborators need to send in separate applications and fees?
YES, each person needs to send an application and $35, however they may arrive in the same envelope.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR FAMILY, SPOUSE OR PET

If I am selected can my husband/spouse, child or pet be accommodated also?
NO, Accommodations are limited to selected individual residents only. No accommodations
for spouses, mates, children or pets are available. Day guests are welcome.
