Nahauliic
1995
Joyce de GuatemalaThe title Nahualiic means "place of magic" and is influenced by the artist's profound interest in Mayan archaeology.
The work itself is made up of 60 branches planted in the ground, each embedded with several highly polished steel blades which reflect elements of the surroundings. The visitor follows a path through this grove of branches which leads to an altar in a stand of redwoods. Guatemala sought, in Nahualiic, to combine forms that would reflect the complexity of the historical tensions between nature and technology.
