Located in the redwood-forested Santa Cruz Mountains, the Djerassi Program will make the private 583-acre Program facility in Woodside available to the public on a limited basis from April through November. Preserved in perpetuity through a conservation easement with the Peninsula Open Space Trust, the pristine beauty of the natural landscape and the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean are spectacular. The walking tours also include a selection of the more than 40 site-specific sculptures created on the property by resident artists over the Program’s 34 years.
The Program offers the public access through three types of guided tours: 6 Director’s Tours ($50 per person), led by Executive Director Margot H. Knight; 12 Two-Mile Tours (free of charge), led by Program staff and volunteers; and a limited number of Private Tours; advance reservations are required for all types of tour. All Director’s and Two-Mile Tours begin at 10am, participants are asked to arrive at 9:45am.
A Director’s Tour typically lasts about 4 1/2 hours, covers approximately 3½ miles, and visits more than 25 sculptures, including an architectural installation, Estaciones des Luz (“Stations of Light”) by Seattle artist Mark Reeves. The tours also include the Artists’ Barn – the primary studio space for the performing and visual artists – the Artists’ House, The Middlebrook Studios, and in-depth conversation and personal insights into the artworks.
The Two-Mile Tours are about 2 1/2 hours in length and include approximately 20 sculptures.
A limited number of Private Tours are available for groups of up to 25 for a suggested donation. Interested parties may call (650) 747-1250 for more information.
Tours are strenuous as the trails consist of both steep uphill and downhill hiking, totaling approximately 300 feet in elevation. Registered guests will receive additional instructions and a map to the property in advance of their tour.
